VAINO SPENCER

Mathilde Krim Sumi Leonard

This 81 year old judge presides over the Court of Appeals and doesn’t have plans to retire for another decade. One of the first black female judges in a United States courtroom, her call to right injustice began two decades before the Civil Rights Movement. She is fiercely democratic and a"behind-the-scenes" mover and shaker in the political arena for the past 5 decades, Spencer has a hard time understanding how anyone cannot be socially active when there is so much work to be done, be it improving the school system or helping the homeless.

QUOTE:
"When I was younger, up until when I was 60, I was very impatient with people. Not with dealing with people in court but the general sector. When I would see something that annoyed me, I thought, "What’s wrong with this person?" I didn’t cut people any slack. But as I have matured and grown older I am much more tolerant. I understand that people are not cut from the same cloth. The way they are is a result of their life experience. In that way I think aging is an advantage. After all, there should be some gifts that come with aging!!"
